Fiat Café

Let me tell you a little story about my favorite restaurant in the city.

Once upon a time, a young girl (moi) wandered soho in search of some dinner to bring back for her and her sister.  It was a time consuming and arduous task: should she get pizza, sushi, sandwiches, etc… ???  Finally, like an oasis in the desert, she saw the flashing red lights.  “FIAT CAFÉ” they read.  She went in for two panini’s, and it’s been love ever since.

Fiat Café is a tiny little Italian restaurant on Mott Street, in the Nolita district of Manhattan.  Considering how good their food is, the prices are unbelievably low.  Pasta Carbonara, Fettucine Alfredo, Grilled Salmon with sautéd Spinach.. this place has it all.  Their most expensive dish is around $16. That’s unheard of in NYC.  Fiat Café is small, but intimate and charming.  A really great place to go for a date!

There’s only one person I ever go to Fiat with, and she goes by the name of Molly: my ex-college roommate.  We’ve probably been to Fiat hundreds of times, so I can tell you exactly how this place works.

#1- it’s cash only, so please keep that in mind.  If you find yourself in a pickle and have no cash (the story of my life) there’s an ATM around the corner, but it’s always best to come prepared.

#2- everywhere is good, but the best are the seats by the window.  That’s where all the extra space for coats, gloves, hats, and purse storage is, as well as all the electrical outlets if your phone is dying (again, story of my life)  If you get to the window seats on the left hand side, you’re even more golden because that’s where they keep their magazines.  You know, for random dinner perusing and such.

#3- their pasta is amazing. The regular menu choices are un delice, but always check out the specials.  Last time, I had the pasta carbonara and I pretty much ate the entire bowl.

#4- if you want to be a good girl/boy, their salads are pretty amaze as well.  You can get grilled shrimp, salmon, tuna, chicken on it.  Pretty much anything.

#5- order a bottle of wine.  Don’t be a wimp and get a glass.  Wash down your delicious meal with a glass (or two, or three) of red.  The antioxidants are good for you- just look at the french!

#6- desert is a must.  Personally, I recommend the Tiramisu and some coffees.  Really hits the spot after all that pasta.
